My family and I recently enjoyed a day visiting Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, Ma. The zoo had something for everyone to enjoy and it is a great family destination. Southwick’s Zoo is open daily from April 11th to October 31st each year. You can rent strollers, wagons and wheelchairs for a reasonable price, also. You can tell from this sign that the zoo has a sense of humor!

2015 is Southwick’s Zoo’s 50th anniversary. There are special events scheduled throughout the rest of the year. You can check their website for events that are coming up.

Southwick’s Zoo is over 200 acres. There are 850 exotic animals in this zoo and many interactive exhibits to enjoy and learn about the creatures.  There is a 35 acre deer forest inhabited by Eurasian Fallow Deer, and you can stroll through while the deer roam freely throughout the forest. The Deer Forest has food for the deer available to buy, and you can actually feed the deer!

My kids especially enjoyed the Petting Zoo. There are Alpacas, and farm animals like chickens and goats. My kids really loved interacting with the goats. For kids that live in a city, the Petting Zoo is an enjoyable experience. The Petting Zoo does have special food for purchase, and your children can have a blast feeding the animals!

Southwick’s Zoo does allow you to bring in your own lunch, and there are many shaded picnic areas where you can rest for a minute and refuel. The zoo does have over 7 food venues that are great if you don’t want to bring your meal, or if one of the kids needs a snack during the day. I would recommend bringing water bottles with you since you will be doing a lot of walking, and on a hot day you will want to stay hydrated.

If you need a break from walking, take the Woodlands Express train that goes through the North American Elk habitat and wetlands. The Skyfari Skyride lets you view the African Plains area from up above.

Southwick’s Zoo is a fun place and the kids have the opportunity to learn about many different animals. If you visit this zoo, your whole family should have a great time.
