If you love pizza, but you are wanting to change things up a bit... Then you HAVE to try your hand at making Calzones! Really not as difficult as you may think. Come on! Let's make them together!
Tonight I decided to make a ground turkey, pepperoni and olive Calzone.
Start by browning some ground turkey. Add in Italian Seasoning.
Then some garlic salt.
If you can handle the heat, throw in a little red pepper flakes.
My pizza dough recipe makes enough for two Calzones. (Yay for leftovers!!!) Roll out a large rectangle.
Drape half of your dough over the edge of a large cookie sheet. Spread a thin layer of your favorite pizza sauce over half of your dough.
Time to add the toppings!
I chopped my pepperoni into smaller pieces for this Calzone.
Don't forget the olives! I love olives!
Of course...Cheese. Wonderful, beautiful, delicious cheese.
And a little more cheese...
Fold the dough over to make a pocket and pinch the edges to seal the Calzone.
Now, remember you do this twice. Look at those beautiful twins!
Take a sharp knife and make several slits in the top of the dough to let the steam out.
Why not go the extra mile and brush the Calzones with a little butter and sprinkle them with parmesan cheese?
Bake until golden brown and mouth-watering-ly gorgeous! (Hmmm... Is mouth-watering-ly a good enough description?)
Allow to cool a bit. Slice and serve with a side of pizza sauce for dipping.
1 lb ground Turkey, browned
1 Tsp Italian Seasoning
1/2 Tsp Garlic Salt
1/4 Tsp Red Pepper Flakes
1 jar Pizza Sauce (or Spaghetti Sauce)
16 oz. Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
Grated Parmesan Cheese
Add italian seasoning, garlic salt, and red pepper flakes to turkey. Roll out dough into two large rectangles. Drape half of the rectangle over the edge of a large baking sheet. Spread layer of pizza sauce. Add turkey meat, pepperoni, & olives. Sprinkle on cheese. Fold dough over and pinch edges, sealing the pocket. Repeat with other half of dough. Make several slits in the top of the calzone to allow steam to escape. Brush with melted butter. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top. Bake at 450˚ for 15-18 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before slicing. Serve with a side of pizza sauce for dipping. Enjoy!
